Rack Sleeves

Similar to 19" rack flight cases, 19" rack sleeves are fitted with rack strip to accommodate a range of rack mounted equipment and come in a selection of unit (u) sizes. One ‘Unit’ is 44.5mm (1.752″) in height with a width of 482.6mm (19″). This standardisation has been in place for decades and is still used today for most industry’s equipment manufacturers.

When selecting a 19″ rack sleeve, there are a few things to bear in mind. How many ‘Units’ are to be mounted in the sleeve? This is not just the quantity of items but the total height in ‘Units’ of the equipment to be housed in the case. Secondly, the overall depth of the rack should be considered. This will be the deepest equipment (front to back), plus any additional space for connectors at the rear.

One of the differences between 19" rack cases & 19" rack sleeves is the lack of removable doors. Rack sleeves are not fitted with doors and instead are left open, meaning any connectors and cables that protrude from the rear of the rack mounted equipment are less of a concern when considering the overall depth of the sleeve.

Rack sleeves are also finished in one of three exterior painted finishes as opposed to laminate finishes. These finishes include a black painted finish, a hard-wearing and water-resistant black polyurea coating, and an eco-friendly plain plywood finish that does not use any paints or chemicals.
