5 Star Cases Change of Ownership: A New Era Begins

5 Star Cases, the UK’s leading flight case manufacturer, is delighted to announce that following the retirement of Keith Sykes in 2020, the company is now under a change of ownership with Managing Director Justin Locks and Operations Director Ingus Lasinskis taking over Keith’s shareholding of 5 Star Group Holdings.

Keith, a stalwart in the company's history, began his journey with Ipswich-based ProTect Cases in the early 1980’s, which was acquired by 5 Star Cases in 1991 and two years later he ascended to the position of director and shareholder, acquiring the company, along with Mossman Trunks, in 2008.

In 2012, Justin Locks, the company’s General Manager, was appointed Operations Director, also acquiring a shareholding in 5 Star Group Holdings in 2016 and becoming Keith’s business partner. With Keith slowly stepping back in 2020, Justin took the helm as Managing Director. At this time, Ingus, with an impressive tenure at the company, was promoted to Operations Director after around 15 years of dedicated service in other managerial roles within the company.

“I’m extremely proud to have been part of taking 5 Star from humble beginnings to where it is now,” says Keith. “Justin and Ingus have been integral of that and it’s gratifying to know that I leave it in such good hands.” The transition marks an exciting chapter in 5 Star Cases' history, and the new partnership with Justin and Ingus at the helm, who continue to be committed to upholding the company's reputation for excellence and innovation in the field of flight case manufacturing. “I have learned a lot from Keith over the 26 years I have worked with him,” concludes Justin, “Both Ingus and I are grateful to him for putting his trust in us and handing over the 5 Star reins. We wish him a very happy retirement and are looking forward to doing his legacy justice.”

Introducing Our New Range of Budget Crates

To celebrate a year of the Crates By Design brand, we have launched a new range of budget packing crates.

Available in two sizes, with options for either skids or casters, these crates offer the 5 Star quality we are known for without breaking the bank.

As with all of our packing crates, these crates are CNC-machined for accuracy and repeatability from 18mm durable OSB (Oriented Strand Board), but are fixed together with screws instead of our signature sprung metal clasps to secure the individual panels to each other. All of our budget packing crates feature screw pilot holes for easy construction and are supplied with fixings.

5 Star Breaking Mental Health Stigma

As one of Europe’s leading flight case manufacturers, 5 Star Cases has been serving multiple industries for over 40 years with products that ensure safe and secure transport of vital goods around the world. From entertainment, medical and telecoms to motorsports, many companies & organisations have entrusted us and our 75+ strong team to deliver the packaging solutions they require to successfully run their businesses. For 5 Star, building a team who trust each other, lean on one another, and share common values has been its utmost priority right from the start. This also includes normalising discussions about mental health at work and breaking down barriers when it comes to the stigma of mental illness.

According to 5 Star’s Accounts & HR Manager Kirsty Locks, authentic human connections need to start with treating every member of the team as an individual and ensuring everyone feels that they belong. “This is what creates true diversity and inclusion, and that’s why we’ve been so passionate about advocating this within our team,” says Kirsty. “For everyone to feel they belong, this also means being vulnerable at times, which is why we have been integrating mental health and wellbeing services within our workplace to keep employees happy and in a healthy state of mind.”

The company has taken some important steps to ensure the mental wellbeing of its workforce is being looked after. “We’ve always known how important our staff’s mental wellbeing is, but during the pandemic we realised just how vital it is, so we did something more about it. We signed up for The Healthy Workplace, funded by Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council and delivered by Everyone Health Ltd. The Healthy Workplace service supports workplaces across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to improve the health and wellbeing of their employees. 5 Star is also running an EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) in partnership with Peninsula and Health Assured, which includes mental and wellbeing support for all employees and their families, including phone and face to face appointments,” Kirsty explains.

5 Star Joins the Living Wage Employer Scheme

5 Star Cases is proud to announce that we are now a licenced Living Wage Employer.

Although 5 Star has always been committed to paying our staff a fair wage & has been paying above the real living wage for a number of years, we wanted to get this accreditation to show our continued commitment to pay all our staff at least the actual living wage, not just the minimum, regardless of age and length of service.

Our Personnel Manager at 5 Star, Kirsty Locks, comments; "One of our most important assets and years of success at 5 Star has been, and continues to be, down to the great team of people we have working for us. We hope this accreditation shows any potential staff that may wish to join the company that they will be important to us, and that we invest in our team, as we continue to grow and expand the workforce"
